2023 Motivational Interviewing Series

MI is an evidence-based and strength-based conversation style that helps people resolve ambivalence and increase commitment for making a behavior change. Motivational Interviewing increases the likelihood that people will own a change behavior and become more internally motivated. Motivational Interviewing is one of the most researched communications-based interventions available with over 400 outcomes studies determining its effectiveness in a wide variety of settings. This training is designed to help you learn the spirit, foundational skills, and processes of MI. Participants will feel the “spirit” of MI through exercises that highlight personal experiences and perspective. Participants will be able to identify the processes of MI and as well as describe ways in which MI is both directive and empathic. Participants will leave this training with practical knowledge of the MI fundamentals and some initial MI skills. The ongoing bi-weekly nature of this training will allow participants the opportunity to describe places where they excelled and struggled when applying MI and will provide additional opportunities to practice. Skills developed will be nuanced and deepened. This training includes didactic presentation, case examples, and small and large group activities.

Audience: Clinical Staff, CHWs, MAs, Nursing, PAs, MDs, etc.. Introductory level training. Unfortunately, most cases of chronic diseases faced in medical settings are preventable through changes in behavior (e.g., smoking cessation, weight loss, healthy diet, physical activity, taking medications as prescribed). Because such health behaviors are predictors of decreased health risk, health behavior change is an important element of our work with patients. MI is an evidence-based and strength-based conversation style that helps people resolve ambivalence and increase commitment for making a behavior change.

Audience: Frontline Staff such as Front Desk, Outreach & Enrollment, CHWs, etc. Outreach and Front Desk Staff are often the first point of contact for most patient interactions. Unfortunately, these Frontline Staff sometimes face verbal abuse and emotional outbursts from patients who are experiencing a variety of frustrating situations. These frustrating situations can arise from both personal issues (e.g. health anxiety, financial concerns, fear, lack of sleep) and systemic issues (e.g. scheduling problems, Covid, insurance concerns, staffing shortages). Positive and warm interactions with frontline staff is a high predictor of overall patient satisfaction. Motivational Interviewing provides proven skills to help rapidly de-escalate and increase engagement and trust with patients.
