Motivational Interviewing Series for Outreach & Front Desk

Audience: Frontline Staff such as Front Desk, Outreach & Enrollment, CHWs, etc.

Introductory level training

Outreach and Front Desk Staff are often the first point of contact for most patient interactions. Unfortunately, these Frontline Staff sometimes face verbal abuse and emotional outbursts from patients who are experiencing a variety of frustrating situations. These frustrating situations can arise from both personal issues (e.g. health anxiety, financial concerns, fear, lack of sleep) and systemic issues (e.g. scheduling problems, Covid, insurance concerns, staffing shortages). Positive and warm interactions with frontline staff is a high predictor of overall patient satisfaction. Motivational Interviewing provides proven skills to help rapidly de-escalate and increase engagement and trust with patients. 

ICHCA will be providing four (4) cohorts of Motivational interviewing (MI) trainings over 2023. Each cohort will begin with a 4-hour Motivational Interviewing training and be followed by six (6) 1-hour trainings. Each cohort will be targeted toward a different health center audience, adapted based on the needs of those present: Clinical Staff, Outreach, Supervisor, and Behavioral health staff and others looking for more advanced MI training.

MI is an evidence-based and strength-based conversation style that helps people resolve ambivalence and increase commitment for making a behavior change. Motivational Interviewing increases the likelihood that people will own a change behavior and become more internally motivated. Motivational Interviewing it is one of the most researched communications-based interventions available with over 400 outcomes studies determining its effectiveness in a wide variety of settings. This training is designed to help you learn the spirit, foundational skills, and processes of MI. As a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), Dr. Manthey provides an individualized training experience for organizations of any size. Over the past 15 years, he has trained thousands of professionals in motivational interviewing in the US and abroad on its applications to diverse areas such as healthcare, employment, rehabilitation, mental health, corrections, education, and social services.

Dr. Trevor J. Manthey, MSW, Ph.D., MINT member is interested in researching and training interventions that help facilitate self- determination in mental health and rehabilitation. This interest in self- determination has led to peer-reviewed publications on many topics including Motivational Interviewing (MI). Trevor is a member of MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) and the Strengths Institute.  Trevor has a BS in psychology with a minor in business management and an MSW degree.  He received his doctoral degree from the University of Kansas. Trevor has worked for several research and training agencies including the Idaho Child Welfare Research and Training Center, The Washington Institute for Mental Health Research and Training and The Office of Mental Health Research and Training in Kansas.

Trevor has been a consultant and trainer for several State Vocational Rehabilitation agencies in their efforts to implement Motivational Interviewing system wide. In order to ensure fidelity to the intervention Trevor has provided training and individualized coaching and feedback to vocational rehabilitation counselors, supervisors, benefits planners, and rehabilitation technicians. This is often accomplished by coding audio-recordings of actual interviews and then providing constructive coaching through telephone calls and further individualized technical assistance. As organizations progress in their ability to provide MI services Trevor helps develop internal MI coaches who help run internal MI “coaching circles” which enable organizations to sustain their MI skills over time. Trevor provides consultation on systems wide change management and skill development. Some of the trainings available include but are not limited to: Motivational Interviewing Introductory Motivational Interviewing Advanced Group Motivational Interviewing Motivational Interviewing for Supervisors Motivational Interviewing Coaching Circle Development Introduction to MI Audio Coding and Feedback Motivational Interviewing With Family Members.
